Paul van Son
Paul van Son (born 16 August 1953 in Leiden) is a Dutch business executive in the energy sector. From 2009 to 2020 he acted as CEO of Munich-based Desertec industrial initiative (Dii). Since the beginning of 2021 he is Dii's President.[1]
Early Life and Studies[edit]
Paul van Son studied Power Engineering and Energy Economics at Delft University of Technology from 1971 to 1979, after which he completed his military service. Later in his career he attended a postgraduate programme in Corporate Governance at Nyenrode Business University.[2]
Career[edit]
He worked as a grid management developer at Siemens, as head of interconnection management with Dutch utility SEP (later TenneT) and as manager for Europe and Africa at Energy and Control Consultants (USA), which was acquired by KEMA in 1994. From 1998 van Son was Managing Director for the renewable energy sector at Essent, CEO of Essent Energy Trading and chairman of the Board of Deutsche Essent GmbH in Düsseldorf.[3] In 2015 he was named Country Chairman of innogy SE (part of RWE) for the MENA region and Turkey, headquartered in Dubai.[4] In 2009 he began working as CEO for Desertec industrial initiative, a position which he held until the end of 2020. Since 2021, he is the organisation's president.
Other activities[edit]
Van Son is the founder and honorary president of the European Federation of Energy Traders (EFET).[5] He is chairman of the Energy4All Foundation in the Netherlands, a non-profit organization promoting decentralized energy systems in Africa.[6]
