Clann Cathail is an Irish clan descended from Cathal mac Muiredaig, a son of Muiredach Muillethan.[1]. A branch of the Uí Briúin Aí dynasty — eight members of this clan became recognized by their vassals as kings of Connacht. They traced their descent from Brión mac Echach Muigmedóin and ultimately, Conn of the Hundred Battles, the eponymous namesake of Connacht.
In Gaelic Ireland prior to the imposing of English law, the most powerful sub-family within the clan were the Ó Flannagáin[2][3][4], but their kinsmen from other sub-families occasionally held the role of chieftain. Other notable leading houses within the Clann Cathail were Ó Maol-Brennain[5], Ó Mugroin [2] [3] , Ó Maol-Mórdha [2] [3] and Ó Carthaigh[2] [3] .
Kings of Connacht descending from Clann Cathail included:
- Cathal mac Muiredaig, reigned 728-735.[6]
- Dub-Indrecht mac Cathail, reigned 764-768. [6]
- Artgal mac Cathail, reigned 777-782, abdicated. [6]
- Cináed mac Artgail, reigned 786-792. [6]
- Máel Cothaid mac Fogartaig reigned 818.[6]
- Murchad mac Áedo, reigned 839-840. [6]
- Fergus mac Fothaid, reigned 840-843. [6]
- Mugron mac Máel Cothaid, reigned 848-872. [6]
After the reign of Mugron mac Máel Cothaid ended with his death in 872, his successor, Conchobar mac Taidg Mór, was from a different branch of the Uí Briúin Aí, as Conchobar was descended from Cathal mac Muiredaig's brother Indrechtach mac Muiredaig[7]. Conchobar's O'Conor descendants would go on to rule Connacht until the late 15th century[7], keeping their Clann Cathail kinsmen as close advisors with the hereditary posts of chief poet [8] and chief steward of Connacht[9]
