ClassicFlix is a home video company that specializes in the distribution of classic films and TV from the early 1900s through 1970. To date, ClassicFlix has released several dozen titles on Blu-ray and DVD with two distinct lines, ClassicFlix and CF Silver Series.

History[edit]

ClassicFlix began as a retail and rental website in 2007 that focused on classic movies and TV carrying films from various studios..[1] In 2017, ClassicFlix started their own DVD and Blu-Ray label. As a sub-licensor of material, ClassicFlix partnered with MGM, Shout! Factory, and other studios for classic titles to be restored and then distributed onto physical media[2].

ClassicFlix's restoration process includes retrieving the best source material possible, digital editing, and other technologies.[3] Their restorations have been included in various best-of lists including Los Angeles Times,[4] Cinema Retro,[5] and Film Comment magazine.[6][7]

Release Approach[edit]

ClassicFlix has two distinct release types. On the premium ClassicFlix line are films that have undergone major restoration that begin with higher quality source material (including the use of original nitrate film elements, when available). Examples include Fritz Lang's You Only Live Once and Anthony Mann's T-Men.[8]

The CF Silver Series is a budget line with a focus on the restoration of films using 3rd or 4th generation source materials, due to the fact that higher quality source materials are lost. The CF Silver Series includes the works of various performers including the groundbreaking works of Thelma Todd and Patsy Kelly, a pioneering female comedy duo of the 1930s rivaling the likes of Laurel & Hardy.[9] ClassicFlix’s collection includes all the their short comedy films released before Thelma Todd’s premature death in 1935.[10]

Blondie TV Series[edit]

A Kickstarter fundraiser was launched by David Kawas, the founder of ClassicFlix, to bring the 1957 Blondie TV series, based on the original Blondie comic strip, to Blu-ray in a special edition.[11] The series was released by ClassicFlix in September 2018 despite not meeting the fundraiser goal.

Little Rascals[edit]

In Sept 2020, ClassicFlix launched a crowdfunding project to restore all 80 of the original Hal Roach Our Gang/Little Rascals sound short films[12] which have deteriorated due to time and neglect [13]. To date, 22 of these films have been restored to their original state [14] [15]
