Claude Berrebi

Claude Berrebi (Born May 12, 1970) is an Israeli economist and associate professor at the Federmann School of Public Policy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Early Life[edit]

Claude Berrebi was born in Paris and immigrated to Israel with his family in his youth. He first lived in Israel as a temporary resident but later moved to permanent resident status. In 1985 he moved with his family from Netanya to Eilat, where he graduated from Goldwater Comprehensive School.

Education[edit]

Berrebi studied Economics a the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, completing his B.A. in 1995 with summa laude distinction. In 1998, Berrebi completed his first M.A. in Economics (earning Summa Cum Laude honors) while simultaneously receiving another master's with honors in Business Administration with a finance specialization. In 2000, Berrebi earned a second M.A. in Economics from Princeton University, specializing in empirical applied economics and earned his PhD from Princeton in 2005. Berrebi's doctoral dissertation, under the supervision of Professor Alan Krueger, dealt with the causes and economic effects of terrorism.

Academic Career[edit]

From 2004 to 2013, Berrebi was a senior economist at the Rand Institute and taught at the Pardee RAND Graduate School. During this time he was also a visiting Associate Professor of Eocnomics at UCLA. In 2011, he was appointed the head of the Executive Master Program in Public Policy (ExMPP) at Hebrew University, a position he held until 2019. Between 2015 and 2018, Berrebi was also the Deputy Director General, the Director of Research and the Labor Policy program chair at the Taub Center for social policy studies in Israel. During in sabbatical in 2019, Berrebi was the Israel Institute Visiting Professor at Princeton University's School of Public and International Affairs. Berrebi's work focuses on major public policy issues related to security, economics and politics. In recent years, his work has focused on the Israeli economy, labor markets, individual-level economic behavior, public economics and political economy. Berrebi has been published in top academic journals such as the American Political Science Review, Defence and Peace Economics, Economica, The Journal of Conflict Resolution, the Journal of Economic Perspectives, the Journal of Politics and Public Choice among others.
