Clay Zombies is a 2021 American comedy horror science fiction film written and directed by Jake Jolley. Starring Diane Franklin as DJ St. VC Skatewell, the film follows Dr. Moulder who unwittingly unleashes a deadly "clay virus" upon the inhabitants of Kilntown, Ohio. Everyday local heroes, led by Sheriff Locke, must not only survive the onslaught of clay zombies, but overcome their differences to unmask the true culprit behind the "Claypocalypse". Clay Zombies utilizes both Computer graphics and stop motion effects, relying mostly on the latter for the creation of the clay zombies. The film premiered at the Grandview Theater and Drafthouse on 2 October 2021 and held a second premier on 30 October 2021 at the London State Theater in London, Ohio. During the later premier, a special Q&A session was held with Diane Franklin and other members of the cast, as well as 1980's nostalgia band Fire Tiger, which performed the title theme song for the movie. Clay Zombies is expected to be released on streaming in early 2022.[1][2]

Clay Zombies was created as an ode to classic horror films of the 1980's era. While relying heavily on stop-motion special effects that were common in Ray Harryhausen films, the film is also a deconstruction of the Zombie apocalypse sub-genre of filmmaking made popular by shows such as The Walking Dead (TV series).[2] Clay Zombies was filmed in the region of Central Ohio, primarily in Columbus, Grove City, and London. Although the movie was originally filmed in installments and intended to be a web series, director Jake Jolley decided to create a feature length film instead in 2019. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the movie took much longer to complete than originally intended, not finishing principal photography until late 2021.[2]

Reception

The film has received mixed reviews by critics. Horror Society gave the film 3 1/2 stars, praising the film for its oddball horror comedy. However, the same critics lamented that it did not use the practical effects that are so appreciated by horror fans.[3] The American podcast The Grindhouse Girls gave the film a "thumbs up" for the delightful performances of the actors, but felt that the plot was lacking.[4] Matt Nappo of the Minddog TV podcast enjoyed the film, calling it an "ode to the silly and heartfelt thrillers of cinematic yore".[5]
