Back to 1993, T. Boone Pickens's Mesa Petroleum launched a division called Mesa Environmental, to provide natural gas conversion kits to United Parcel Service (UPS) as well as United States Postal Service (USPS). In 1996, Pickens Fuel Corporation was created by Pickens and Andrew J. Littlefair based on Mesa Petroleum to start the natural gas fueling business. After FortisBC purchased 75% of Pickens Fuel Corporation in 2001, it then became Clean Energy Fuels Corporation.
Clean Energy Fuels went public on May 25, 2007. Currently TotalEnergies is the largest shareholder of the company.
