In 2022, 87,900,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide were emitted in Bavaria, which corresponded to 3.5 tonnes per capita.[1]

As sea levels rise, the risk of flooding despite flood defenses increases.[2]

In 2020, the Bavarian Landtag passed legislation to require Bavaria to reach net zero emissions by 2045.[4] In 2021, this was strengthened to 2040.[4]
In January 2025, the Bavarian government announced that the target was changed back to 2045.[5] This contradicted commitments that had been made as late as December 2024.[6]
