Climate change in Saxony
Climate change in the German state of Saxony affects various environments and industries.
Greenhouse gas emissions
Between 1990 and 2021, greenhouse gas emissions fell by 55%, but per capita greenhouse gas emissions did not change considerably.[1]
Impacts of climate change
Birds
The migratory patterns of swallows and storks have changed due to the effect of climate change, making winter more mild.[2] A larger number of swallows died due to exhaustion, because of continuous rain, the low temperatures and a lack of food.[2]
Forests
Forests in Saxony have been damaged, with oaks particularly badly affected.[3]
Response
In June 2021, the state released a "Energy and Climate Program", which would reduce emissions in the state to 65% of the 1990 level.[4]
For many years, the state had tried to slow down the expansion of renewable energy.[5]
Many municipalities in the state oppose wind turbines and solar panels in their areas.[6]
