Personal life[edit]
Clint Sears was born in Kansas City and attended Shawnee Mission Northwest High School[2] and The University of Kansas. Sears was a featured panelist[3] at SXSW in 2017 and a panelist[4] at the Immersive Design Summit in 2019.
Career[edit]
Tales of Halloween[edit]
Tales of Halloween[5] is a horror anthology film consisting of 10 interlocking Halloween stories. Sears wrote one segment, “The Night Billy Raised Hell”[6], which was directed by Darren Lynn Bousman[7] (Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV, and the upcoming Spiral) and produced by Epic Pictures. The film premiered on July 24, 2015 at the Fantasia International Film Festival[8] and was positively received, with Rotten Tomatoes certifying it "fresh" with a 79% rating. The anthology won the 43rd Saturn Award for Best DVD/BD Release in 2016.[9]
Crow's Blood[edit]
Crow's Blood[10] is a Japanese horror streaming television drama miniseries with an original story concept written by Yasushi Akimoto and executive produced by Darren Lynn Bousman. The series was directed by Ryo Nishimura and written by Clint Sears and additional screenplay cooperation by Satoshi Oshio. The international rights to the series were later sold to Miramax[11]. Crow’s Blood was filmed on location in Japan and was later dubbed into English for western audiences. Sears has spoken of his admiration for Japan, and Japanese culture, and said he loved the original language version of the film, telling Movie Vine he “always prefers to watch in the original language whenever possible”[12].
St. Agatha[edit]
St. Agatha[13] is a horror, mystery and thriller film set in the 1950s in small-town Georgia, where a young, pregnant woman seeks refuge in a convent. Sears co-wrote the screenplay with Andy Demetrio, Shaun Fletcher and Sara Sometti Michaels. The film was well-received, with critic Luke Y. Thompson for Forbes.com saying St. Agatha "presented us with horror and hope, through a feminist lens that might just add some enlightenment on the side."[14] 1428 Elm described St. Agatha as “a fun and meditative horror flick”[15]. It was screened on Netflix until August 2020[16].
It’s Alive Created by Neil Patrick Harris[edit]
It’s Alive Created by Neil Patrick Harris[17] is an interactive trick-or-treat experience[18] for Reeses written by Sears, directed by Michael Mancini and starring Savannah Whitten. The experience was launched on 1 October, 2019 when Harris asked his social media followers to help him build a haunted house and fill it with tricks and treats[19]
The Tension Experience[edit]
The Tension Experience, an ARG immersive experience, was launched in 2016. The project was produced by Gordon Bijelonic, directed by Darren Lynn Bousman and written by Sears[20]. The immersive theater production took place over two hours at a secret location in Los Angeles and employed over 40 actors who followed different scripts depending on how participants reacted[21]. The Verge described The Tension Experience as “A dramatically engaging, layered story experience that breathed new life into the ideas of transmedia storytelling” saying it raised the bar for the kind of emotional experiences that people can expect from immersive theater[22]. In 2018, independent film and television production company, AGBO, announced its intention to team with The Tension Experience to develop new immersive experiences and support the development and expansion of the production to more cities[23]. The first planned project was to be the creation of a permanent destination in Las Vegas, with a casino partner[24].
The Lust Experience[edit]
The Lust Experience was debuted in 2017[25], immediately following the success of The Tension Experience. A Bloody Disgusting review said The Lust Experience was a story surrounding an ancient cult that was actively recruiting new members and that “Bousman and Sears pulled every string they could to push us to our mental limits”[26].
Theatre Macabre[edit]
Theatre Macabre was launched in Los Angeles in 2018[27]. The eagerly anticipated immersive experience was inspired by the Paris Théâtre du Grand Guignol, which, in 1897, “specialized in grotesque shows that explored society’s darkest taboos”[25]. Theatre Macabre writer, Sears, described it as: “definitely an adult show” where guests are moved between multiple floors and stages to “help assassins, side with heroes or even turn on the good guys; their choice.”[25]
