Clive Wilson (Author - Designing the Purposeful Organization and Designing the Purposeful World)

Clive Wilson is a writer, keynote speaker[SM1], facilitator [SM2] and coach, whose main focus is the purposeful alignment and leadership of individuals, teams, organisations and communities. He developed the Purpose-centred performance model (PrimeFocus TM) as a result of his engagement with organisations globally, facilitating workshops on strategic alignment and leadership coaching for almost twenty years.  Prior to that, his early career (for 27 years) was as an engineer and manager in the UK electricity industry.

His first book, Designing the Purposeful Organization[1], how to inspire business performance beyond boundaries was published by Kogan Page in 2015.  This was followed by Designing the Purposeful World,[2] the Sustainable Development Goals as a blueprint for humanity which was published by Routledge in 2018.

Wilson is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and a Fellow and Ambassador for the Chartered Management Institute.

Since 2015, Wilson has chaired the United Nations Association, Harrogate Branch as an advocate for the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals.

Wilson was managing director at Primeast[3] between 2002 and 2008, a UK-based consultancy operating globally for over thirty years designing leadership development programs and providing organisation consulting.  He remained a board director until stepping down in 2018 in order to provide opportunity for succession and to devote a larger portion of his time to sustainability and especially climate change mitigation.

Early life

Wilson was born in 1955 and grew up in the county of West Yorkshire, spending most of his early years in the city of Leeds.

Education

Wilson attended Colton County Primary School in Leeds and then Cross Green Comprehensive School, also in Leeds where his subject preferences were Mathematics and Science.  In 1972 he undertook a student apprenticeship scheme with the Yorkshire Electricity Board during which time he studied Electrical Engineering at Kitson College of Art and Technology and subsequently Bradford College of Technology.  In his forties he attended the University of Bradford and achieved a European Master of Science degree in Safety and Reliability, including Environmental Management and with a dissertation on Values and Behaviours in the Workplace.

Philosophical background

Wilson is an enthusiastic advocate of fair play and equal opportunity.  His writing reflects his belief that everyone has talent and that performance comes from the development and alignment of personal strengths in support of inspiring purposes which are in turn aligned with the emerging needs of humanity.

Books

Designing the Purposeful Organization[4], how to inspire business performance beyond boundaries was published in 2015 by Kogan Page.

PrimeFocus
PrimeFocus is the framework which is the subject of Clive Wilson's book 'Designing the Purposeful Organization' (Kogan Page)

Designing the Purposeful Organization, is Wilson's best-known book, in which he explains how leaders can deploy Purpose as a strategic anchor.  He discusses the steps needed to establish a primary purpose that considers the needs of all stakeholders within an organisation.  Designing the Purposeful Organization explains how to implement a more enlightened and authentic leadership style that aligns people's strengths to a compelling future. Wilson has developed the Purpose-centred performance model (PrimeFocus TM) which serves as the framework for high-performance leadership.

Designing the Purposeful World, The Sustainable Development Goals as a blueprint for humanity. In the concluding chapter of Designing the Purposeful Organization, Wilson proposed that the concepts and methodologies he described for organizations could be applied at any level, including humanity.  Just after he wrote these thoughts, the United Nations published the draft for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), prompting Wilson to write his new book which was published by Routledge in 2018. Since then, there has been a notable shift towards this "global agenda" prompted in no small way by growing public support for equal rights and concern for global climate change.

Other projects

In the 1990s, while still in the UK Electricity Supply Industry, Wilson was involved in programme management as part of the UK privatisation programme and the opening of the competitive energy markets.  During an audit of the "Competitive Metering Programme" that he was responsible for, he received feedback that the programme would be more successful if attention was paid to corporate culture and the effect of leadership style on it.  He consequently studied and became accredited in culture change and leadership style with Detroit-based Human Synergistics[5].  When his programme was complete, he took the decision to share his experiences as an independent consultant, establishing his own business and leaving the electricity industry in 2000.

Primeast

In 2002, Wilson was asked by Primeast, a global professional services organisation providing organisation consulting and leadership development programs, to join them as Managing Director.  Here, he also worked with global organisations as a facilitator, coach and consultant, supporting them in their strategic alignment to company purpose with the goal of improving business performance.

[SM1]Keynote speakers are often selected to raise interest in a particular event, such as a conference or large meeting sponsored by a corporation or association, and draw attendees to attend that program.

[SM2]A facilitator often helps a group of people to understand their common objectives and assists them to plan how to achieve these objectives; in doing so, the facilitator remains "neutral", meaning he/she does not take a particular position in the discussion
