COPE was founded on August 19, 2020, in Austin, Texas during the early days of the Covid-19 Pandemic by a group of parents of pro Fortnite gamers: Shae Williams, Chris Spikoski, and David Herzog.

In June 2020, during the initial pandemic lockdown, a Twitter thread in which kids and parents engaged in a conversation about parental support for esports gaming and practice time was started. In this thread questions arose concerning the gaming and esports industry as well as more specific questions such as: “Why should parents support their kids gaming?” “Are academic scholarships available for gaming and esports?” “What sort of contracts are involved in pursuing a professional career in gaming?”

Two months later, Williams, Spikoski, and Herzog co-founded the nonprofit Coalition of Parents in Esports, Inc. with the organization officially launching on Twitter on October 7, 2020 obtaining 501(c)3 nonprofit status on December 13, 2020.

Coalition of Parents in Esports provides resources for gamers seeking assistance with such topics as: ‘getting parents to understand esports’ or ‘starting a team in their high school.’ COPE attended the Carolina Games Summit in August 2021, the Esports Trade Association the following September, the Esports Business Summit that October, as well as The Esports Awards in November of 2021. COPE also had the first “COPE Cabana” meeting spot for parents at PAX West.
