Cobalt Robotics is a robotics and machine learning company founded by Dr. Travis Deyle and Erik Schluntz.[1] The company has engineered security robots for building and office workplace security.[2] Companies that have used Cobalt's security robots include Yelp and Slack.[2]

History[edit]

In 2016, Deyle and Schluntz founded Cobalt Robotics after leaving jobs at Google X and SpaceX respectively.[3] Cobalt developed their first security robot before partnering with Yves Behar's design company Fuseproject.

In March 2018, Cobalt secured $13 million in series A funding, led by Sequoia Capital among other investors.[4] Alfred Lin of Sequoia Capital joined Cobalt's board of directors around this time.[5]

Security robot[edit]

Fuseproject deliberately avoided overt humanoid designs.[2] Wired described the robot as "a cross between a Dalek and Bullet Bill [from Super Mario Bros.]."[2] The robot was designed to mimic office furniture in look.[6]

The security robot has 60 sensors giving it spatial awareness with lidar, ultrasound, motion and thermal sensors, as well as day-night cameras.[7][8] The robot is equipped with facial recognition, two-way video chatting and building visitor badge scanning, as well as capabilities for detecting security issues such as open doors, leaks and spills, and intrusions.

The robot works in tandem with a remote human operator who addresses security problems beyond the AI's scope.[9]

While some companies have complimented the robot's functionality, others have noted its limitations, such as not using force against intruders and logistical barriers like climbing stairs.[8]
