Coffee Break Stories is an online literary journal based in Providence, Rhode Island. The journal was founded in 2016 by four students at Brown University.
The journal publishes short prose in three categories, which they refer to as "Flash," "Sudden," and "Short."[1] Readers can choose how much time they have to read and the website generates a story from its database that matches their time parameters. As the readers continue to interact with the site, the website uses an algorithm to determine their preferences. Users can also avoid content flagged with trigger warnings and avoid genres of writing they might not enjoy.
According to the journal's guidelines:
"Coffee Break Stories publishes short prose that entertains, surprises, and makes use of its form in original ways. We are looking for stories that do something in the short space they have - stories that make us feel, think, laugh or cry."[2]
In December 2016, the journal was accepted as a fledgling listing on Duotrope, a subscription-based service that allows its users to search for literary journals based on certain parameters.
