The Travel Almanac magazine is a bi-annual contemporary culture magazine that focuses on art, fashion and travel. It was founded in 2009 by Paul Kominek and is published in Berlin.[1] It hosts international events[2] and produces a series of art booklets called The Travel Diary.
History[edit]
The magazine was founded in Berlin in 2009 by Paul Kominek, a known music producer, DJ and co-founder of music label Dial Records. He was joined by music producer John Roberts as co-editor in 2010.[3] The debut issue featured the filmmaker David Lynch on its cover.[4]
Past contributors include Richard Prince, Juergen Teller, Matthew Barney, Taryn Simon, Helmut Lang and Harmony Korine. The fashion section has featured stories by Collier Schorr, Julia Hetta, Charlotte Wales and Ari Marcopoulos.[5][6]
The magazine has become known for its unique spin on the topic of travel and for its intimate conversations with international creatives such as Isabelle Huppert, Jeremy Scott, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Willem Dafoe and Hari Nef.
In 2014, the magazine created a limited edition of beach towels in collaboration with German fashion designer Bernhard Willhelm. The item was produced in the Japanese town of Imabari, known for its towel manufacturing industry.[7]
For Issue 10, published in 2016, the magazine included a 64-page supplement called Last Chance To Try created by Juergen Teller, which featured original photography depicting a journey to Poland when attending a wedding. It was the inaugural edition of a series of art booklets called The Travel Diary.[8]
For Issue 13, published in 2017, the magazine created 4 individual covers, shot by the acclaimed photographers Collier Schorr, Juergen Teller and Julia Hetta. It also included a 66-page booklet produced by Juergen Teller in collaboration with illusionist David Blaine. The cover of the booklet became part of a Juergen Teller exhibition at the Suzanne Tarasieve gallery in Paris.[9]
Reception[edit]
In 2017, the magazine received the German Design Award for best editorial design.[10]
The magazine is frequently described as one of the most influential travel and fashion publications worldwide.[11][12][13]
