Cognitiv is a data science company that specializes in using deep learning to more accurately predict consumer behavior.[1] Founded in 2015, the company is co-headquartered in New York City and Bellevue, Washington.[2]

History[edit]

Cognitiv was founded in Silver Spring, Maryland in 2015 by Jeremy Fain, Marc Hudacsko, and Aaron Andalman to bring deep learning to advertising.[3] In 2017, Cognitiv entered into an exclusive agreement with IBM Watson (computer) powering several Watson advertising products. In 2019, Cognitiv spun out from IBM, establishing itself as an independent company once again.[4]

Despite disruption from the COVID-19 pandemic, Cognitiv doubled headcount in 2020 and onboarded a number of new clients, including Casper Sleep, Bufferin, and Cricket Wireless.[5][6]

As of September 2021, the company employs approx. 55 people across offices in New York City, Bellevue, Washington, and Berkeley, California.[7]

Products[edit]

Cognitiv offers clients a variety of deep learning products, depending on the consumer outcome desired:

  • Cognitiv Performance - Cognitiv's core product that uses custom deep learning algorithms to bid programmatically and drive efficient customer acquisition.[8]
  • Cognitiv Incremental - Cognitiv made news as the first deep learning partner to run side-by-side neural networks in order to more accurately distinguish organic performance from ad-attributed performance.[9]
  • Cognitiv Footfall - Cognitiv uses geo-location data to customize a deep learning algorithm that optimizes media exposure for increased in-store conversions.
  • Cognitiv Audience - Cognitiv applies deep learning to better understand existing consumer purchase behavior and builds custom plug-and-play audiences that can be activated in demand side platform consoles such as The Trade Desk, Xandr, and Google Marketing Platform.
  • Cognitiv Retargeting - Cognitiv delivers a unique approach to standard behavioral retargeting practice by parsing all site data through a neural network before ever serving an advertisement.
  • Cognitiv Retention - By analyzing first party data and building a custom time-to-event model based on past consumer purchases, Cognitiv increases customer lifetime value (LTV) through active retention marketing. As of May 2021, Cognitiv Retention is currently in beta.
  • Cognitiv Behavioral Branding (beta) - Cognitiv applies performance models to the top of the funnel, leading to outsized results and more efficient brand marketing. As of May 2021, Cognitiv Branding is currently in beta.

Operations[edit]

Through applied research and advanced feature sets, Cognitiv pioneered a unique approach to performance media buying, relying primarily on algorithms rather than media buyers to optimize customer acquisition cost.[10] Within this algorithmic approach, Cognitiv's data science department works closely with machine learning engineers (MLE) to build custom deep learning neural networks for clients. These neural networks identify patterns in consumer behavior to predict future purchases. Cognitiv then applies these predictions to performance media models and purchases inventory across digital display advertising, mobile advertising, smart TV, and over-the-top media service channels.[11][12]

Awards[edit]

Cognitiv has won numerous awards across a variety of categories, including marketing, advertising, data science, and deep learning.
