The founders developed the concept during the Velocity Cornerstone program, a startup sprint run by the University of Waterloo's Velocity incubator in fall 2024. They won first place in the program's pitch competition.[1]
The company relocated from Waterloo to San Francisco in 2025.[2]
Technology
Colare's assessments simulate engineering workflows such as PCB design, CAD modeling, and circuit analysis. Candidates complete tasks in a web browser rather than answering multiple-choice questions.[1] The platform scores submissions automatically using AI and provides results to recruiters. Assessments can be configured by discipline and seniority level, and integrated with applicant tracking systems.[1]
