ColdHubs Ltd. is a Owerri-based company that provides solar-powered cold storage for small scale farmers.[1][2][3][4][5][6] ColdHubs was founded, in 2015, by Nnaemeka Ikegwuonu.[3][7]

History[edit]

ColdHubs was founded in 2015 in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria.[3][7] It also has offices in Fort Collins, Colorado.[8]

In 2017 ColdHubs was shortlisted for the UK Royal Academy of Engineering's Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation.[9][10] In it won the 2020 Waislitz Global Citizen Disruptor Award[11] and was the inaugural AYuTe Africa Challenge winner in 2021.[1]

Services[edit]

ColdHubs provide cooling services to small scale farmers and fishermen, who rent 20-kg-capacity crates to store their products at the hubs that are available 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.[12][13]

Coldhubs operates at 54 locations, in 22 states throughout Nigeria;[1] site locations are near farms.[14] The three-metre-square units can each hold three tons of food, the sun's power cools the units during day time and charges batteries that operate the refrigeration during the evening.[1][15][13] They charge users 100 (US 25 cents) per day, per crate of storage.[1]

ColdHubs's cold storage units keep food fresh for up to 21 days.[1][15][13]

Brand and reputation[edit]

In 2020, ColdHubs stored 40,000 tons of food, serving a total of 5,250 customers.[1]

ColdHubs has prevented over one thousand tons of carbon-dioxide entering the earth's atmosphere.[1]

People[edit]

Coldhubs was founded and is run by, former farmer, Nnaemeka Ikegwuonu.[3][7] As of 2021 it employed 66 people.[13]
