History

The journal was founded in 1970 under the leadership of Rodrigo Guerrero,[4] with the aim of disseminating biomedical research produced in Colombia and the broader Latin American region. During its early decades, editors including Francisco Falabella (1973–1998), Pablo Barreto, and Guillermo Llanos (1998–2001) contributed to the development of its editorial policies and regional presence. In 2001 the journal transitioned to digital publication, and in 2008 it was included in the Science Citation Index of the Web of Science. It was subsequently indexed in MEDLINE in 2011.[5]

In 2008, Colombia Médica formalized its editorial structure with the institutional support of the Faculty of Health at Universidad del Valle. The faculty established guidelines regarding the framework, responsibilities, and procedures for appointing members of the Editorial and Scientific Committees, including the use of internal open calls. Around this time, the journal began transitioning to electronic publishing through the use of the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform, aiming to improve, editorial workflow, and online dissemination.[6]

In 2014, the journal had its first full-text article indexed in PubMed and archived in PubMed Central (PMC).[7][8] This development marked the beginning of its inclusion in international open-access repositories.[citation needed]

Between 2015 and 2024, Colombia Médica implemented a series of editorial reforms aimed at enhancing transparency, data sharing, and research reproducibility. These initiatives have been documented in several editorials.[9][5][10] In these texts, editor Mauricio Palacios also discussed challenges faced by Colombian journals in relation to the Publindex classification system and highlighted the importance of institutional support in maintaining standards for scientific publishing.[11][12]

Recognition and impact

In 2019, Colombia Médica received a recognition award on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. The event included acknowledgments of the scientific contributions of Dr. Nubia Muñoz, a 2008 Nobel Prize in Medicine nominee, and Dr. Pelayo Correa, founder of the Population Cancer Registry in Cali. According to statements made during the ceremony, the journal was described as the most widely circulated and frequently cited medical journal in Colombia, and the second most cited in Latin America at that time.[13][14]

Editorial mission

According to its stated mission, Colombia Médica aims to promote the visibility and impact of biomedical research from Latin America, with a particular emphasis on public health, clinical medicine, and epidemiology. The journal also expresses a commitment to contributing to the global scientific dialogue by adhering to international editorial and ethical standards.[10]

Publication

Since 2010, Colombia Médica has used Open Journal Systems (OJS), a software platform developed by the Public Knowledge Project, to manage its editorial workflow. The adoption of this platform enabled online submission, peer review, and article publication processes. The journal is published quarterly and offers content in both English and Spanish.[10][12]

Colombia Médica publishes original research articles, systematic reviews, short communications, case reports, editorials, commentaries, and letters to the editor. The journal gives preference to manuscripts that address health topics with regional or global relevance.[citation needed]

Indexing

Colombia Médica is indexed in MEDLINE/PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), Web of Science (Science Citation Index Expanded), SciELO, HINARI, DOAJ, and Latindex. The journal was included in MEDLINE in 2011, becoming one of the Colombian medical journals represented in this database.[5][15]

Editorial and peer review policies

Colombia Médica employs a double-blind peer review process and adheres to the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Its editorial workflow is managed through the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform.[16][9] CM states that it follows the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) recommendations.[17] Ethical approval and informed consent are mandatory for clinical research articles.[citation needed]

Editorial committee

Colombia Médica has an editorial structure that includes an editor-in-chief, associate editors, an editorial committee, a scientific advisory board, a peer review committee, a production team, and an ethics committee. Many members are affiliated with the Universidad del Valle.[citation needed]
