The Colombo Kings (abbreviated as CK) is a franchise Twenty20 cricket team based in Colombo, Western Province, Sri Lanka, that competed in the inaugural Lanka Premier League in 2020. The team is owned by Murfad Mustafa, a Dubai-based Indian businessman.[3][4] For the season, the team was coached by Rangana Herath under the captaincy of Angelo Mathews, who was also announced as the icon player. Andre Russell was named as the marquee foreign player in the inaugural season.[5] English batsman Laurie Evans made the most runs while Afghan bowler Qais Ahmad took the most wickets for the Lanka's league.[1][2]
The team was the most successful team of the season, winning six out of eight matches,[6] though they lost in the semi-final against Galle Gladiators.
Season summary[edit]
In the Colombo Kings' first-ever Lanka Premier League match, which was also the league's first-ever match,[citation needed] they played the Kandy Tuskers. While bowling, the Kings could not get out Kusal Mendis, who scored 87 of 52[clarification needed] to help the Tuskers score 219/3. The Kings also scored 219[clarification needed], which meant the game went to a super over. In the super over, the Tuskers scored 12/0[clarification needed] in reply to 16/1 by the Kings; this meant the Kings won the game.[7]
In Game 2, against the Galle Gladiators, the match was reduced to 5 overs a side because of rain. Andre Russell scored 65 of 19[clarification needed] to propel the Kings to 96[clarification needed], while Galle could only muster 62[clarification needed] in response.[8] The Kings' batting fluctuated in Game 3 as they were bowled out for 149[clarification needed] in response to the Dambulla Viiking's 175[clarification needed]. This meant that the Kings' unbeaten run[clarification needed] came to an end.[9]
In Game 4 their bowlers restricted the Jaffna Stallions to 148/9. The only batsman who really got going for the Stallions was Wanindu Hasaranga, who scored 41 of 23[clarification needed]. The Kings chased the total down, winning the game by 6 wickets.[10]
In Game 5, Qais Ahmed 2-8[clarification needed] from his 4 overs to help bowl out the Tuskers for 105[clarification needed]. In response, the Kings chased the total down inside of 15 overs to win the match by 7 wickets.[11] In Game 6, the Kings faced the Gladiators for the second time in the season. The Kings were bowled out for 175[clarification needed], with Pakistani bowler Mohammed Amir taking a fifer. The Kings bowlers could not replicate Galle's[clarification needed] as they chased the total down, winning by 8 wickets.[12]
In Game 7 against the Stallions, the Colombo Kings batted first, with their opener Laurie Evans scoring 108 of 65[clarification needed]. This was also the LPL's first-ever century[citation needed] and it helped lift the Kings to another win.[13] In the last game of the group stage, Qais Ahmed performed with both bat and ball. He first took 2-23[clarification needed] from his 4 overs before hitting 50 of 22 balls. This gave the Kings another win and they finished first on the table.[14]
In the semi-final, the Kings opposed the Gladiators. They were impeccable with the balling[clarification needed], the pace trio of Amir, Nuwan Thushara, and Dhananjaya Lakshan giving away just 80 runs, in 12 overs, and picking up 4 wickets. However, with the batting, the Gladiators had enough opportunity to steal the win from Kings. When the game reached its final over, the Gladiators needed 15 off 6 balls. Lakshan struck two sixes, and later Lakshan Sandakan concluded the game by striking a four, giving the Kings the loss.[15][16]
