Colossal Kaiju Combat is a franchise of giant monster fighting games made by Sunstone Games. Currently in development, the franchise features original characters created by members of the community. The first release is free, featuring four monsters from Kaijuland (a Facebook game), with a paid-for release called "The Fall of Nemesis: Clash of the Kaijujin", with 11 original characters.

Development[edit]

Colossal Kaiju Combat (originally "Kaiju Combat") is a spiritual successor of the Atari Godzilla Unleashed, Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee and Godzilla: Save The Earth that appeared on PlayStation 2, Xbox, Gamecube and Wii. Simon Strange, a 15-year veteran of the video game industry who has worked over 20 console titles, including the three aforementioned Godzilla fighting games, as well as Rampage: Total Destruction -- another giant monster game -- began conceptualizing Colossal Kaiju Combat in 2011.

Strange teamed up with comic book artist, Matt Frank (lead IDW's Godzilla series) to collaborate with their Kickstarter backers to develop their monsters into playable characters for the game. The first 9 playable characters were voted in by the backer community (who are also credited as Design Team Members).

During the Kickstarter campaign, Colossal Kaiju Combat was revealed to be the first of two releases in a series of games that can cross-over in-game assets. The first release, Kaijuland Battles (a 4-character demo), followed by The Fall of Nemesis: Clash of the Kaijujin, the first "big" release to include 11 characters (including the 9 that were co-designed and voted on by the Kickstarter backers).

Background[edit]

The project's first Kickstarter campaign ended August 2, 2012 and was unsuccessful in its attempt to reach its $350,000 goal.[1] However, its second Kickstarter campaign was successful after receiving $112,513 with 1,247 backers.[2]

Originally titled, "Kaiju Combat", Sunstone Games was hit with a trademark dispute on the use of the word "Kaiju", as Wizards of the Coast declared that it is too similar to their franchise, Kaijudo: Clash of the Duel Masters. To avoid further legal complications, Sunstone Games changed the title of their game and franchise to "Colossal Kaiju Combat."[3][4]

Merchandise[edit]

Looking to increase revenue to further develop the first release, Sunstone released a series of Colossal Kaiju Combat trading cards (and associated card game). These cards follow the spirit of the games by including monsters designed by the fan community. The first set of cards were drawn by Frankie B. Washington (artist and co-creator of the indie comic book, Robot God Akamatsu).

These, along with other merchandise, such as statuettes of the playable characters of the first release, are also available at Sunstone's website.
