Column National Association (Column N.A.) is an American nationally chartered commercial bank headquartered in Chico, California.[2] The bank operates both as a local community bank and as a developer‑focused infrastructure provider, offering deposit accounts and payment rails to financial technology companies via application programming interfaces (APIs).[3][4][5]

History

Northern California National Bank was chartered on March 28, 2006, as a community bank based in Chico, California.[2][6] It initially focused on serving individuals and small businesses in the surrounding area.

In 2021 the bank was acquired by a family from northern California, and its legal name was changed to Column National Association. The institution continued to do business under the names Northern California National Bank and "NorCal" for local customers.[7][6] Around the same time, former Plaid president and co‑founder William Hockey and his wife Annie became the bank's co‑owners and co‑chief executives and repositioned it as a technology‑driven platform bank aimed at developers and fintech firms.[8][4][9][1]

Startup research firm Sacra reports that the founders self‑funded roughly US$50 million to acquire Northern California National Bank and that Column remains entirely founder‑ and employee‑owned, with no external investors.[10] An evaluation by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) notes that as of December 31, 2021, the bank had total assets of about US$453.3 million and deposits of about US$389.7 million.[3]

In July 2023 the OCC rated Column "satisfactory" under the Community Reinvestment Act using the small‑bank examination procedures.[11]

Regulation

Column National Association is insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and is supervised by the OCC as a commercial bank with a national (federal) charter. It is also a member of the Federal Reserve System.[2][12] As of 2025 the FDIC lists the bank as operating a single domestic office in Chico, California.[2]

In the OCC's October 2023 list of Community Reinvestment Act performance evaluations, Column is categorized as a small bank and assigned an overall rating of "satisfactory".[11]
