Connecticut Biotech, LLC
Founded in May 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic[1] and shortage of N95 masks. Connecticut Biotech's principal product is a custom-fitted 3D printed mask frame. A mask frame is an exoskeleton that sits atop an existing mask to reduce air gaps.
This technology which is a combination of facial recognition and 3D modeling was developed by the University of Connecticut (UConn) and Dr. Cato T. Laurencin, CEO of the Connecticut Convergence Institute for Translation in Regenerative Engineering in an effort to find cheaper and more readily available solutions whose efficacy could nearly match N95 masks in clinical studies. [2] Measurements for the mask frame are gathered from two customer-submitted photos. With two face photos taken near a reference object, a 3D map of the face is developed and then a 3D mask frame exoskeleton is printed.
The product was launched in July 2020. In August, 2020, Connecticut U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal, Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont, Connecticut Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, and UConn President Tom Katsouleas toured the facilities and held a press conference.[3][4][5]. In September, 2020, teachers in Middletown, CT returned to the classroom and were provided mask frames for improved community safety.[6]
