Connie 'Mae' Williams is an African American author born in Union County, North Carolina.[1] Her first novel, Emily's Blues (1989), won her in (1990), The Arts and Science Emerging Artist Award. (1990–1996), The Union County Community Arts Council Award-Biennial Report: North Carolina Arts Council (1993–1995); and (1996) The North Carolina Arts Council Award; and The National Endowment for the Arts Award.

The second of twelve children, Williams is a graduate from California State University, Northridge (English degree) and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Education Sp. Ed degree.
