Charles McGee (Irish: Séarlas Mac Aodha; 06 July 1892 – 24 April 1916) was an Irish farmer, fisherman and later police officer who served as constable in the Royal Irish Constabulary from 1912 until his death in 1916. He is regarded as the first RIC casualty of the 1916 Easter Rising. Future Tánaiste Sean MacEntee would be formally charged by the British Government for responsibility in Constable McGee's murder.

Early life[edit]

Born as Charles McGee at House 5, Inishbofin island, County Donegal, Ireland on 06 July 1892, the son of Edward McGee (Irish: Éamon Mac Aodha), a fisherman, and his wife, Mary McFadden (Irish: Máire Nic Pháidín), both of whom were from Inishbofin island.[1] In 1901 and 1911, the family's address was House 5 Inishboffin Island.[2][3].[4] The island of Inishbofin (Irish: Inis Bó Finne) on which Charlie McGee was raised is located in a remote area of northwest Ireland off the coast of County Donegal within the Gaeltacht. The island of Tory is located 10.7 km north of Inishbofin.

Constable McGee was raised within a Roman Catholic and Ulster Irish speaking household known as the Whiting McGees. Prior to joining the RIC, Charles worked as a fisherman as the weather permitted. Fishing in the immediate region of Inisbofin was a notoriously dangerous affair, wiping out an entire generations of a family in some instances.
