History[edit]

1871–1990[edit]

Continental-Caoutchouc und Gutta-Percha Compagnie, today Continental AG, is founded in Hanover and begins production of technical rubber goods and medical articles. Pneumatic tires for bicycles and rubber hot water bottles become classic products. In 1988, the ContiTech brand for technical products is introduced.

1991–2000[edit]

In 1991, the Continental “Technical Products” division becomes the ContiTech brand. In 1993, Benecke-Kaliko is incorporated into Continental's ContiTech division. Key products are leatherette and foils.[1]

2001–2010[edit]

ContiTech acquires a majority share of a Chinese air-conditioning and power-steering hose line manufacturer and enters into a joint venture with the Korean company Dae Won Kang Up for the production of air springs.[5] A plant for manufacturing drive systems for air conditioning lines is built in Romania, as well as a factory for air spring systems in Turkey. The joint venture Benecke Changshun Auto Trim opens a plant for soft trim materials for vehicle interiors in Zhangjiagang.[6]

In 2004, the former ContiTech Holding GmbH becomes ContiTech AG. In the same year, it takes over Phoenix AG.[7] This merger between ContiTech and Phoenix gives rise to the world's largest manufacturer of rubber and plastic products outside the tire industry.

In 2007, ContiTech acquires British hose producer Thermopol, with sites in the U.K., the U.S., Romania and Korea[8], as well as Danish drive belt manufacturer Roulunds, based in Europe and Asia[9], plus Serbian conveyor belt company Univerzal Kolubara[10] and a conveyor belt plant belonging to Metso Minerals in Moers.[11] In San Luis Potosí Mexico, the company establishes an engine mount plant and a factory for surface materials. A production plant for textile and steel cord conveyor belts is built in Ponta Grossa, Brazil, and a factory for hoses, lines, anti-vibration technology and air springs is established in Changshu, China.

In 2007, ContiTech shares are traded on the stock exchanges in Hamburg and Hanover for the first time.

2011–2020[edit]

The company takes over the conveyor belt business of Tianjin Xinbinhai Conveyor Belt Co. Ltd. in Tianjin, China[12], the Australian M.I.R.S. retail company in Perth,[13] the British steep-angle belt manufacturer Specialised Belting Supplies in Thetford,[14] the conveyor belt manufacturer Legg Company Inc. in Halstead, Kansas,[15] the industrial conveyor belt division of the Metso Corporation[16], and the molded brake components business of Freudenberg Sealing Technologies mit drei Standorten in Deutschland, Frankreich und Mexiko.[17] Furthermore, ContiTech acquires the air conditioning business of Parker Hannifin with factories in the U.S., Mexico, Czech Republic and South Korea.[18]

ContiTech opens a new compounding center in Nyíregyháza, Hungary, a research and development center for mounting and anti-vibration technology in Changshu, China,[19] a hose line plant in Subotica, Serbia[20] a factory for air conditioning and power steering lines in Kaluga, Russia[21], and builds a hose plant for oil production and gas extraction in Macae, Brazil.[22] The company enhances its plastics expertise with the purchase of Inotec Innovative Technologie GmbH in Kohren-Sahlis and Präzisionstechnik Geithain GmbH in Geithain,[23], Germany, opens an air conditioning plant in Hangzhou[24], China, and establishes a joint venture with the Chinese partner company Jiangsu Changshun Group Co. Ltd. for the construction of a second Chinese plant for soft trim materials for vehicle interiors in Changzhou.[25]

Since 2013, ContiTech’s expansion strategy has been geared toward continuously reducing the company’s dependence on the OEM business in the automotive industry. In 2015, ContiTech acquires its American competitor Veyance. The Ohio-based company complements ContiTech in previously underrepresented markets such as the United States and South America.[26] In addition, ContiTech takes over two plants for surface materials from the Belgian Mecaseat Group in Pamplona, Spain, and Wagrowiec, Poland.[27] With the launch of a production plant for rubber compounds in Changshu, China, ContiTech now also has its first compounding center for general applications beyond tires and conveyor belts outside Europe.[28] At the end of 2015, the new plant for producing low-emission vehicle interior materials also commences production in Changzhou, China.

In 2016, ContiTech takes over the Australian rail transport specialist Vulcanite.[29] This company, with 60 employees and two production sites at its headquarters in Sydney and in Malaysia, develops, designs and produces components for the insulation of mechanically generated vibrations.[30] In 2017, surface specialist Benecke-Kaliko, which belongs to ContiTech, takes over the Hornschuch Group headquartered in Weissbach, Germany. The two companies now operate together under the Continental brand and today constitute the Surface Solutions business unit.[31] The company is intending to expand its industrial business further and open up new sales markets, particularly in North America. ContiTech also opens its first manufacturing facility outside Germany for elastomer coatings in Changshu, China.[32]

In 2017, ContiTech purchases the South African technology company Advanced Imaging Technologies to expand its service offerings for the conveyor industry, as well as the company Custom Machining Services in Valparaiso, Indiana in the U.S., to extend its range of services for the hose industry.[33]

In 2018, ContiTech opens a new plant in Changshu, China, where it produces 3D blow-molded hose lines for use by the automotive industry in high-performance turbochargers.[34] Moreover, construction begins in Changshu of a foam factory for automotive interiors.[35] In Qingdao, China, ContiTech relocates to the Qingdao Sino-German Ecopark, where it manufactures hose products and mobile fluid systems for passenger cars and commercial vehicles.[36] In Pune, India, it starts the construction of a plant for the manufacture of surface materials for automotive interiors.[37]

In 2019, ContiTech takes over the Anti-Vibration Systems business of Cooper Standard, based in Novi in the U.S. State of Michigan. The unit has five locations in Canada, France, India, and the U.S. and employs a workforce of around 1,000 people.[38] ContiTech also expands its material expertise with the acquisition of the plastics specialist Merlett Group, based in Daverio, Italy. The company, with around 500 employees, manufactures hoses for industrial applications at three locations in Italy and Switzerland.[39]

The company develops and produces functional parts, components and systems for the automotive industry, machinery and equipment engineering, the rail transport industry, the printing industry, the construction industry, the chemical and petrochemical industry, shipping and aviation, the mining industry, agriculture and forestry, the food and pharmaceutical industry, the energy industry, for home, garden, and leisure, as well as numerous other areas, and combines all this with individual services.
