Corey Bonalewicz, more commonly known as Corey B., is an American radio host and social media personality. He is noted for posting humorous explainer videos on his Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook accounts. As of February 2022, he had approximately 15 million followers across platforms.[1]
Background[edit]
Corey B. dropped out of college.[1] He started recording himself for Facebook posts as early as 2014.[1] He moved to New York City in 2019.[1]
Corey hosts radio programs and his own podcast, in addition to his social media presence.[1] He is engaged to Alicia,[1] who also regularly appears regularly in his social media posts.[1]
Career[edit]
Radio[edit]
Corey B. formerly worked as a DJ for 93.3 WFLZ Tampa.[2] He also previously held on-air roles for WBBB-FM 96.3 Chicago and WEZB-FM 97.1 New Orleans.[3][2] He later worked for WNYL-FM ALT 92.3 and hosted the station's morning show.[4] In November 2018, he was chosen to be the host of the afternoon drive for the same station.[3]
Social Media[edit]
Corey starting posting videos of himself on Facebook in 2014; but at first, his posts did not catch on with audiences.[1] His first breakthrough video, which garnered millions of views, was a clip as a clip in which he imitated his girlfriend.[1] He gradually gained a following and ended up attracting sponsors and advertisers.[1] It took five years to monetize his videos.[1] Corey produces entertainment videos in a variety of genres, including pranks, how-to videos and food vlogs, among others.[1]
Boxing[edit]
Corey B. planned to become a boxer, similar to other social media stars such as Logan and Jake Paul.[4] In June 2021, Corey B. staged a publicized incident in which he slapped Paulie Malignaggi, a former boxing champion, in the back of the head with chalk.[5] Corey later explained that he planned it to challenge Malignaggi to a boxing match,[4] after the latter called Corey on his radio program to tell him that "Tiktokers and Youtubers are a problem to boxing" and that he should quit.[6]
Following this chalk slapping incident, Nick Kessler, a radio DJ and host of WRRV's Morning Grind, contacted Corey B to introduce himself as a boxing opponent.[4] Corey declined to fight Kessler.
In September 2021, the boxing match between Corey B. and Paulie Malignaggi was officially announced. The fight is a co-main event for Official Celebrity Boxing Miami.[7] The event happened on October 2, 2021, at the James K. Knight Center in Miami, Florida. Malignaggi won the 3-round match via a unanimous decision.[8][9]
Podcasting[edit]
In December 2021, Corey B. and fellow radio host Cane Peterson were dismissed from their radio shows on ALT 92.3. Part of the reasons for the separation was the hosts' refusal to be vaccinated against COVID-19, as well as the launching of their podcast.[10] For his part, Corey B. explained that he started the podcast because he was concerned that his listeners would forget about them, as he was going to lose three weeks of radio work because of the station's COVID-19 vaccination rules.[10]
The Cane and Corey podcast is scheduled daily, available at 9:00AM EST for Patreon subscribers and between 11:00AM and 3:00PM PST for demand-side platforms such as Apple podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, and others.
