The Cornell Media Guild, Inc., also known as CMG, is a Cornell University student-run 501(c)3 non-profit corporation based out of Ithaca, New York.[1] It is fully independent from the University and receives no funding from it.[2] It is the parent company of 93.5 WVBR-FM, CornellRadio.com, and Electric Buffalo Records.[3][4][5][6][7]
History[edit]
Then-named the Cornell Radio Guild, the organization was formed in 1935 and later became a non-profit membership corporation on September 22, 1941.[8][9] CMG initially was focused around radio broadcasting, and then it opened its own station, WVBR-FM, once it opened in 1958.
CMG later changed to its current name in 2013 and expanded in the 2000s as it opened an online free-form radio station called CornellRadio.com and, in 2014, a record label called Electric Buffalo Records.[10] The record label signs both students and local Ithaca residents.[11]
Organization[edit]
The Cornell Media Guild, and all its divisions, is run managed by students.[8][5][7]
Local volunteers, although not inducted members of the Guild, help run CMG as weekend DJs, traffic managers, and in providing support to students.[2][7]
Executive Board[edit]
The student Executive Board is elected every March by inducted student members.[12] Terms last one year and the transition of power typically occurs during the yearly reunion weekend between current CMG members and alumni, known as Symposium.[13]
The board is responsible for electing the members of the Board of Directors.[3][14] These alumni serve as guidance and a resource to the student Exec.
