Cory Phelps (born February 7, 1984) is an American professional boxer. He had a record of 16-6-1 in 2014, but six consecutive losses eventually brought his record to 16-12-1 by 2019. In 2008 his fight with Bobby Gunn resulted in a controversial draw, and many felt that Phelps had won. Later in the same year he fought Alexander Frenkel for the vacant IBF Youth cruiserweight title, and in 2009 he faced Tommy Karpency for the vacant WBA Fedecentro Light heavyweight title. On February 15, 2014 he defeated Jason Williams, winning the vacant ABA Cruiserweight title. On August 23, 2014, he faced Shannon Briggs for the NABA Heavyweight and interim WBC Latino Heavyweight titles, losing via TKO.

Professional career[edit]

In 2008 Phelps (then holding a record of 12-3) was set to face former IBA World Cruiserweight champion and future WBC USNBC/WBA NABA Cruiserweight champion Bobby Gunn. The fight resulted in a controversial draw[1] with many feeling that Phelps had won.[2] A deep cut was made in Gunn's face (which Gunn claimed required 36 stitches) as a result of Phelp's punches, but which Gunn claimed was due to a headbutt, complaining of this with the referee. However, a video later published by team Phelps in an official statement showed that Phelps didn't commit any foul, controlling the fight with his "cobra-like" jab.[1] In the official statement, team Phelps criticized Gunn for the statements he made regarding the fight, and invited him to a rematch.[1]

On May 17, 2008 he fought Alexander Frenkel for the vacant IBF Youth cruiserweight title in Germany. Phelps lost the fight via KO. He had another shot at a title in January 2009, when he faced Tommy Karpency for the vacant WBA Fedecentro Light heavyweight title. He lost the fight via TKO in the second round. However, he had another shot at a title five years later, when he fought Jason Williams for the vacant ABA Cruiserweight title. He won this fight via TKO in the third round.[3]

On August 23, 2014, he was set to face Shannon Briggs for the NABA Heavyweight and interim WBC Latino Heavyweight titles at the Ring of Dreams Boxing Gym in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.[4] He lost the fight via TKO in the first round.[5]

In 2015 he fought former heavyweight prospect Chazz Witherspoon in a main event scheduled for ten rounds at the GPG Events Center of Pennsauken, New Jersey. He was defeated in the second round via TKO.[6][7]

In 2018 he was set to fight then undefeated Russian boxer Apti Davtaev.[8] He was stopped by Davtaev in the second round.[9]
