Costas Panayotakis (1971) is Associate Professor of Sociology at New York City College of Technology (CUNY).[1][2] He is a prominent Marxist social theorist and one of the supporters of the Occupy Wall Street on September 2011. Panayotakis is an advocate and theorist about the concept of economic democracy.[3][4][5]

He is the author of Remaking Scarcity: From Capitalist Inefficiency to Economic Democracy (2011)[4][2], which theorizes on economic democracy as "a good description of Panayotakis’s vision of a sustainable world" in the words of the American scholar Joel Kovel.

In February 2012, Panayotakis was one of American scholars to sign Manifesto for Economic Democracy and Ecological Sanity, in solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street.[3]

On the topic of political economy Panayotakis has written the book The Capitalist Mode of Destruction: Austerity, Ecological Crisis and the Hollowing out of Democracy (2021).[2] He has also written on the politics of austerity, political sociology and political economy.[1][6]
