Counter-Strike 2 is an upcoming multiplayer tactical first-person shooter developed by Valve. A sequel to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Counter-Strike 2 is a free upgrade to Global Offensive. Using Valve's Source 2 game engine, it is expected to feature major technical improvements over Global Offensive. The game is tentatively slated for a mid-2023 release, with a limited technical test beginning on March 22, 2023 for select players.[1][2]
Development[edit]
On March 22, 2023, Valve announced that Counter-Strike 2 is in development for a summer 2023 release and will be the latest installment in the franchise as free upgrade to Global Offensive. They also stated that all features of the game will be announced at a later date, stating that "Counter-Strike 2 is the largest technical leap forward in Counter-Strike’s history, ensuring new features and updates for years to come."[3]
Gameplay[edit]
Counter-Strike 2 is a technical overhaul of its predecessor with improvements to lighting and other effects, across all game maps. Other improvements include a more precise tracking system for certain in-game actions like moving, shooting and throwing; and a visual overhaul of smoke grenades.[4] Weapon skins from Global Offensive are carried over to Counter-Strike 2.[5]
Beta[edit]
As of March 22, 2023, a limited beta of Counter-Strike 2 is available to play for select players of Global Offensive who meet trust or qualification requirements, such as recent play time and player account standing.[6] The beta is currently limited to two game modes, Deathmatch and Unranked Competitive.[7]
