Counterpunch

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Counterpunch is a four-piece American melodic punk rock band established 2004 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Originally formed by current co-frontmen Eric Hausser (vocals/guitar) and Jared Rohde (vocals/bass) under the moniker Dear You, the bands current lineup consists of Hausser, Rohde, Jim Margle (drums) and Kyle Tilev (guitar/vocals). Their music is heavily influenced by 90’s Epitaph Records and Fat Wreck Chords bands such as Bad Religion, No Use For A Name, NOFX, Lagwagon, Strung Out, and Face to Face.

History[edit]

Formation:Shortly after Hausser’s punk ska band Last Man Out decided to call it quits, drummer Ross Michel approached with a new music project entitled Dear You. Needing a bass player and vocalist to complete the lineup, Hausser contacted Jared Rohde. The two previously met while playing in different projects throughout the Chicago Punk scene.

With a lineup solidified, Michel, Rohde, and Hausser began to write material (still under the name Dear You) that would eventually lead to the band’s first release. The band used the basement of Hausser's parent's house in Palatine as their home base, eventually moving to a practice space called The Haven. Several secret basement shows were thrown at the Haven, including Rise Against, A Wilhelm Scream, and Much The Same. In late 2005, shortly before recording their self-titled debut LP, Andy Lareau (vocals/guitar) was approached to join the band and the name was officially changed to Counterpunch. Ross’s tenure on drums was very short-lived, leaving the band before the recording of the band’s debut LP.

The Self-Titled LP was recorded and mixed in Streamwood, Illinois, United States in Lareau’s basement in early 2006, and first released internationally as ‘An Idiot’s Guide to Being An Asshole’ by Radtone Records in Japan on December 6, 2006. The Japan-only release included two live tracks recorded at Durty Nellies in Palatine, Illinois, United States as bonus tracks. The band used the revenue from ‘An Idiot’s Guide’ to self-release the record in the United States under their own imprint Punch It Records officially November 23rd, 2007.

During this time, the band went through a period of playing with several different drummers. Micky Molinari (August Premier, Showoff, Danger is My Middle Name, Blood People), Mark Michalik, Jevin Kaye (Much The Same, Form Follows Failure), finally finding footing with Richo Marquina (Jinxpack, Black Actress).

They would continue with Marquina to complete writing the material for their second LP, parting ways with Lareau during the process in early 2009. The core was once again Hausser and Rohde, with Marquina now solidly involved. The band finished writing the material that would become both the ‘Heroes & Ghosts’ LP internationally and ‘Dying to Exonerate the World’ LP domestically in the United States, adding Brian Phee on guitar. Engineered and mixed by Mark Michalik at Drasik Studios and Mystery Street Recording Company, Heroes & Ghosts was released internationally in late 2010 by No Reason Records (IT), Funtime Records (BE), Fond of Life Records (DE), Shattered Thought (CH), Disconnect Disconnect Records (UK), and Radtone Records (JP). Counterpunch teamed up with Go Kart Records to release the LP as ‘Dying to Exonerate the World’ in the United States on May 31, 2011. A limited release omitting the tracks Parasites/Scenester Kids and Sweet and Sour was rereleased in 2015 as a limited print color vinyl through Bird Attack Records. This release would see them travel to South America as well, to open up for Rise Against in San Juan, Costa Rica on November 11, 2012.

Two years after releasing Heroes and on the eve of a full European tour that included festival stops at Groezrock(BE),Jera-On-Air(NL), Brakrock Ecofest(BE), Punk Rock Holiday(SI), Marquina decided to leave the band. Jim Margle (We Are The Union) filled in temporarily, eventually taking the job full time.

In 2014, the band began writing for their third full length release, ‘Bruises’, with a lineup of Hausser(vocals/guitar), Rohde(vocals/bass), Phee(guitar), and Margle(drums). They entered Atlas Recording Studio to work with Matt Allison June of 2014. Mixed and Engineered by Allison and later mastered by Chris Fogal at Black and Bluhm, ‘Bruises’ would be released worldwide by Cyber Tracks Records in November of 2014. The release has seen heavy touring, with European festival stops once again at Groezrock, Brakrock Ecofest, Rebellion Fest, Punk Rock Holiday, among others. The band also performed at Riot Fest that year as well. Several Us tours followed, with Phee leaving the band prior to a full US tour with Agent Orange. Kyle Tilev filled in for the tour, and eventually joined the band full time.

The band has currently finished recording their fourth full length album with Chris Fogal at Black and Bluhm Recording Studios.
