Coventry Cat Group is an independent cat welfare charity based in Coventry committed to the care of stray, abandoned and feral cats. The charity formed in 1997 and is entirely volunteer run.

The charity bases its operations from their Cattery Centre on the outskirts of the city. Coventry Cat Group often runs cat welfare awareness campaigns on topics such as neutering and abandonment[1][2]

History[edit]

Coventry Cat Group's origins can be found in a local group of the Cat Action Trust that was established in 1986 by Joyce Ostick. The group grew over the following years, continuing to care for feral cat colonies in the Coventry area.

After nine years working with the Cat Action Trust, the group made a decision to form an independent charity. After a much work, Coventry Cat Group adopted their formal constitution and applied for Registered Charity status with the Charity Commission. In late 1997 Coventry Cat Group were finally granted registered charity status.

Diana Williams who fostered cats for the charity died in May 2012. She generously bequeathed her house to use as a centre for the charity's operations.[3] Work began in 2013 and in May of the same year the first tenant moved into the apartment.

Construction of a large row of pens was completed in the summer of 2013, the new pens were very quickly occupied by new arrivals in the charity's care.

Support sheds and paths were finally in use at the centre by September 2014 in time for the charity’s first annual open day. As of 2014 the charity had successfully rehomed 1500 cats.

In 2017 work began on a dedicated isolation unit at the centre to help care for sick and injured cats in the charity’s care following a grant from Support Adoption for Pets. The Isolation Unit was completed in spring 2018 and features 2 dedicated isolation pens.
