COVID-19 Africa Open Data is an Africa-based collaborative volunteer-run effort to track the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Africa. The group maintains a regularly updated database of country, state, and district-level information related to the pandemic, including the number of positive cases, healthcare workers infected, cases recovered, and deaths, as well as information on laboratories, healthcare services, and local needs[1]. The group provides real-time date sourced from local news agencies, ministries of health, the World Health Organization, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and Economic Community of West African States [2] [3]. The Dashboard includes an interactive map with links to all date sources [4] Covid-19 Africa Open Data is reported to provide more comprehensive and up-to date information than other dashboards due to the inclusion of locally sourced information.[5]

History[edit]

In January 2020[4], Cedric Moro, a consultant in major risks based in Dakar Senegal[6] formed a volunteer collaboration to address the need for accurate up-to-date data to support the response to COVID-19 in Africa. Technical advisers to the project include public health doctors with expertise in infectious diseases epidemiology and neglected tropical diseases[1]. In March 2020 the group partnered with 35 North, a communications consultancy specializing on the African continent to counter Misinformation related to the COVID-19 pandemic[7][6]The group provided data updated daily on an online interactive dashboard and through a twitter account from February 2020. Data from the project has been used in peer reviewed scientific publications[8] and reported by news outlets and medical organisations in Africa and France[9][10][11][12] [6][5][4][13]. In June 2020 the founder of the project noted the difficulty and importance of Decolonization of knowledge and having African data recognised[4], consistent with similar concerns and goals in movements for decolonisation in global health[14] and research[15][16].
