The Coylet Inn is a 17th-century building in Coylet, Argyll and Bute, Scotland, about nine miles northwest of Dunoon. Originally a coaching inn,[1] it sits about 90 feet (27 m) from the eastern shore of Loch Eck, towards its southern end. It was originally known as the Loch Eck Inn.[2][3]
Its earliest known mention is in 1897’s The Geology of Cowal: Including the Part of Argyllshire Between the Clyde and Loch Fine.[4]
The building was badly damaged by fire on 7 July 2015,[5] and reopened after repairs on 31 May 2019.
Film
The building is believed to be haunted by the ghost of a boy who drowned after sleepwalking from the inn to the loch during the night.[6] Filmmaker Paul Murton developed the story into a television movie, 1994’s The Blue Boy, starring Emma Thompson.[7] Thompson returned to the inn nine years later when she held her wedding reception there.[8]
