The Honourable Justice Craig Dowling is an Australian judge of the Federal Court of Australia, serving since 9 February 2024.[1] His appointment, alongside that of Penelope Neskovcin KC, was announced by the Commonwealth Attorney-General on 7 February 2024.[2]
Early life and education
Dowling graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1987 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1989 from Monash University, and a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne in 2009.[2]
Legal career
He was admitted to practice in Victoria in 1991, worked as a solicitor in Melbourne, as a legal researcher in London, and served as Associate to Justice Tony North of the Federal Court of Australia. Dowling was called to the Victorian Bar in 1999 and appointed Senior Counsel in 2017. His practice focused on industrial relations and employment, discrimination, and administrative law. He has taught in the Melbourne Law School LLM program as a Senior Fellow.[1]
Judicial career
The Attorney-General announced Dowling's appointment on 7 February 2024, with his commission commencing on 9 February 2024 in the Melbourne Registry.[2][3] A ceremonial sitting of a Full Court to welcome Dowling was held on 1 March 2024, with speeches published by the Court and professional bodies.[4][5]
