Credit Union Times is a periodical with a paid circulation of "over 9000 credit union professionals" [1] that reports about credit unions.[2][3]

Citations to their stories are found in major newspapers such as The New York Times,[2] The Los Angeles Times[4][3] and The Washington Post.[5][6]

Among the topics it covers are legislative hearings such as a spending review regarding the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau,[6] situations where a Federal agency, the National Credit Union Administration, or various State regulatory authoritities, must intervene.[4] Other types of stories include networking and educational opportunities for employees of credit unions,[7][better source needed] and where Credit Union executives are paid unusually high bonuses.[4][8]

A 2010 Los Angeles Times story about fraud charges by a credit union official who was subsequently promoted to a Federal agency cited reporting by Credit Union Times.[3]

Competition[edit]

Similarly named competing periodicals include Credit Union Journal[4][9][10] and Credit Union Digest;[11] Florida Credit Union News is a quarterly.[12]

History[edit]

The paper, a weekly, was founded by Mike Welch in 1990.[13][14] It is presently owned by The National Underwriting Company.[15]

Controversies[edit]

The newspaper was sued in 2012 for defamation, having published an article March 13 titled "Historic Development Stains CU's Balance Sheet" in which they reported details of an allegation of bank fraud, on the basis of which a credit union foreclosed on an outstanding loan to a real estate developer.[15]
