Cremation Society
A cremation society is an organization, made up of members.[1] A membership in a cremation society allows members to put together detailed plans for their cremation including expenses, final wishes and any other personal touches they may wish to include.[2] Cremation Society members usually pay a subscription fee to become a member and can either preplan and prepay their cremation, or merely pre-register. The fee for membership of a cremation society can vary. Generally, fees are between $25.00 and $50.00 for an individual membership or between $50.00 and $100.00 for a family membership. In some states, state law allows a funeral business to use “society” as a trading name, although no membership is required. In New York (state), the use of the term “society” is prohibited for use by funeral businesses.[1]
Joining a cremation society is a pragmatic way to handle end-of-life concerns while keeping the arrangements affordable and lessening the burden placed on the family. Members of a cremation society even have the ability to negotiate and “lock-in” (means to secure, to fix, to have something definitive, or to have an outcome that will not be changed against the will of someone) the cost of cremation and memorial services while coordinating the details of their funeral.
