Crepon (surname)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Norman family of Crépon, originally from Sauqueville - Arques-la-Bataille (Upper-Normandy), owes its name to the village of Crépon (Bessin). It comes from different Scandinavian lineages belonging to the Danish, Norwegian and Swedish nobility. A certain William FitzOsbern Crepon is the 5th of only 20 verifiable men to have fought alongside William The Conqueror in 1066 AD, and the family played a certain very important role among the Normans throughout their reign. Today there are only approximately 93 persons with the Crepon surname in this world.[1]

Origins and History[edit]

At the origin of the family is a certain Roricon de Crepon (born about 870), who came from Denmark and settled in the Duchy of Normandy, who became the 1st lord of Crepon. His son Rainulf de Crepon, born around 900, married Princess Gunnora of Denmark.

Rainulf's granddaughter, Gunnora de Crépon (Gunnor is an alternative spelling), daughter of Herbastus (Herfast) of Crépon, married the Duke of Normandy Richard II, Duke of Normandy and became Duchess of Normandy.

(William FitzOsbern ; also see Fitz meaning ‘of’), of the Crépon family, was the very faithful friend of King William I the Conqueror, called the William the Bastard, son of Richard of Normandy; He accompanied him to England and fought at the Battle of Hastings (1066) where he commanded the left wing.[2] He was killed in Cassel in 1071 or early 1072. His son, Roger de Breteuil († 1087), Count of Hereford, revolted against the Conqueror in 1075 with other Anglo-Norman barons.
