Cris Huergas
Crispin Huergas Jr (December 22, 1957 – January 6, 2020) was an American car collector and sports car club founder and event organizer.[1] He was the President and co-founder, along with Freeman Thomas, of the R Gruppe,[2] an early Porsche car sports club dedicated to celebrating the "Sports Purpose" essence of the early Porsche 911. His passion for the early the cars helped spark an international resurgence in enthusiasm for modified Porsches and events. [3] [4]
R Gruppe[edit]
Cris and Freeman founded the R Gruppe on May 15, 1999,[5] after an article was published in the April 1998 issue of Porsche Excellence magazine [6] featuring Cris’ lightweight modified 1969 911S[7] along with his 1974 911 Carrera and three other early 911s owned by his brothers. The club was founded with the intention of bringing like-minded individuals together to share technical and historical information related to their cars, as well as sharing views and ideas concerning the ownership, preparation, maintenance and operation of their cars. [8]
Despite a self-imposed membership cap of 300,[9] the club's international influence over the early Porsche community grew with new events and cars being modified. [10] Cris was instrumental in organizing many events including annual Treffens (German for meetings) along the West Coast of California, [11] newsletters, and monthly gatherings at European Auto Salvage Yard (EASY), in Emeryville, California [12]. A number of members' cars have been featured in publications, including; Automobile Mag, [13] 911 & Porsche World, [14] Excellence Magazine, [15] Petrolicous, [16] and videos.
Honorary members including; former Sportscar racing, rallying and Formula One driver Vic Elford, American racing driver and dealer Bruce Canepa, American race-car driver Hurley Haywood, Porsche owner and driver Bob Garretson, 356 Outlaw founder Gary Emory, Porsche automotive designers, Grant Larsen and Tony Hatter, famed racing photographer Jesse Alexander, ex-PCA president Chuck Stoddard, world famous cartoonist Howard Shoemaker, 911 engine gurus Gordon Ledbetter and Jeff Gamroth, EASY owner Jim Brazeale, Excellence Magazine Chief Editor Pete Stout, and others.[17]
