Crowdin
Crowdin is a cloud-based software for localization management[1], used by technical companies like Xiaomi, Reddit, and GitLab. Mainly used for localization agile software[2], including web, mobile, desktop apps, games, and support documentation.[3] Similar to CAT tools, but is mainly focused to be managed by the software companies instead of translation agencies. Company cooperates with and supports educational institutions as a technology partner.[4]
Company history[edit]
Crowdin was founded in 2008 by Serhiy Dmytryshyn as a hobby project, aimed to automate localization for a small group of developers.
The platform was officially launched in January 2009. Since then it gained popularity among software and game development[5](included Minecraft[6]) companies.[7]
On August 07, 2014[8] the company officially released Crowdin out of beta. In August 2015, Crowdin reached more than 50,000 registered users.[9]
As of July 2017, Crowdin claims to have more than 1,000,000 registered users.[10] September 2017, the product is added to GitHub Marketplace.[11]
Translation mechanics[edit]
CAT tool[edit]
The tool has an Online Translation Editor[12], where the translators can make translations and proofread texts.[13] The following 3 translation strategies[14][15] or their combinations can be adopted:[16]
- In-house translation team.
- Professional translation agency. Crowdin has a marketplace with the following translation agencies: Inlingo, Alconost,[17] Applingua, Babble-on, Gengo, Tomedes, Translated, Translate by Humans, WritePath, Farsi Translation Services, Bureau Translations, e2f, Web-lingo, Leanlane, and Acclaro.
- Crowdsourcing.[18][19]
Machine Translations and Translation Memory[edit]
Crowdin has integrated machine translation into its translation workflow. Currently supports the following MT systems: Microsoft Translator, Yandex.Translate, Google Translate, Amazon Translate, Watson (IBM) Translator, DeepL Translator.
Machine translations can be edited by human after the translations are applied in the attempt to make translations more acceptable, which is often regarded as post-editing. [20][21][22]
In-Context[edit]
Translations can be made interactively in the live webpage. Translators and designers cooperate this way, to fit translations into the website. [23][24]
API & integrations[edit]
Integrations[edit]
Crowdin integrates with several automation tools:[25]
- hosting services for version control using Git – GitHub,[26] GitLab,[27] Bitbucket
- issue tracking product – Jira
- integrated development environment (IDE) – Android Studio
- digital distribution service – Google Play[28]
