Cryptograph is an organisation that raises money for charities by auctioning Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) created by notable individuals.[1]

History

The UK-based company Perpetual Altruism began development in 2018 and launched the platform on the 8th of August 2020. It auctions a digital medium called a cryptograph and stores the artwork's ownership as an NFT on the Ethereum blockchain. Cryptograph creators select a charity to receive a portion of the NFT's sale. When the platform's users bid on or resell a cryptograph, the code raises money for the cryptograph's creator and their chosen charity.[2]

On the platform in 2021, Matt Bellamy auctioned three unreleased works: Guiding Light, Tomorrow World and Unintended. [3] Bellamy played Jeff Buckley's Fender Telecaster on the Guiding Light recording. Previously, Buckley used the same guitar to record his album Grace. [3] [4] Combined, the three songs sold for approximately $73,000. [5]

In 2020, The Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation used the platform to raise money by selling eight previously unseen black-and-white Kobe Bryant photos from 1999 as NFTs.[6]

In August 2020, Paris Hilton used the platform to auction a digital painting of her cat for charity. [7][8]

In 2020, Ashton Kutcher sold a low-resolution photograph of a drawing of some eyeballs from his notebook for $4000. He filmed himself setting fire to the original artwork.[9][10] Similarly, Ethereum's founder Vitalik Buterin auctioned a sketch of his quadratic funding formula on the platform.[11]
