Crystal J. Huang (Chinese: 黄洁萍; born October 10) is a Chinese producer, director, and actress, dancer and photographer.
Early life and education
Crystal J. Huang was born Huang Jieping. She and grew up in Shanghai.[1] She showed a strong passion for performing arts, participating in theater and hosting events.
She pursued a bachelor's degree in art in Shanghai before moving to the United States to further her education. She worked in software development before fully transitioning to her artistic career.
Career
In 2018 she played a significant role in the stage adaptation of Amy Tan's novel The Joy Luck Club.[2] She later moved to Los Angeles to train at the Speiser & Sturges Acting Studio[3] and soon after began taking on roles in film and television. Her roles include performances in Bermuda Island, Amber Road alongside Tom Sizemore, American Comedy with Eric Roberts, and Mistletoe Massacre with Bai Ling. She has also made appearances in TV shows such as Shameless.[4]
She is a competitive ballroom dancer and won first prize in the 2014 IGB Ballroom Dance competition in San Francisco. As a photographer she received a merit award in the Black and White Magazine photography competition in 2019.
She transitioned into film production and direction. The psychological thriller Dark Feathers: Dance of the Geisha, which stars Gilles Marini, Michael Madsen, and Karina Smirnoff, showcased her martial arts and dance skills.[5] This film earned several accolades at the 24th Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival, further solidifying Huang's reputation in the independent film circuit, including Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Trailer Awards and Best Picture nomination. She became the first actress from mainland China to win the Best Actress award in a Hollywood independent film.
She founded two production companies, Ivy Images and Unchaseable LLC. In her role as a producer and director, she has worked on various upcoming projects such as Staycation and Dinner with Devil and Boarding House.
