The Crystal Microphone is a piezoelectric contact microphone whose functioning is based on the piezoelectricity phenomenon, where the contact of sound waves with a crystal material produces a compression, traction or movement that derives in an electric tension.[1]

Diaphragm in this device is composed by two or more quartz plaques or pieces, that in front of a acoustic wave does it curve and generates a voltage. Polar diagram of a crystal microphone is omnidirectional.[1]

Their most highlighted advantage is the lower price and high sensitivity (1mV/µbar).

However, there are great disadvantages as their fragility and, therefore, it's highly challenged by moisture and temperature changes. Sound quality, as good for speaking, is not apropiated for music, because the response curve, in an 80 Hz - 16 kHz range, is irregular.[2]
