Cumulus Kid is a game developed by Jason Touhey and Jeffrey Hepburn in collaboration with Crooms Academy of Information Technology. It is a side-scrolling platformer game where you can create clouds under yourself for extra height. It is currently only available in its beta stage, though a full version does exist.

Gameplay

In Cumulus Kid, you control a cloud-shaped man, with the end goal of each level to rescue your sister. Along the way, you can collect Pinwheels, of which there is one in each level. Collecting every pinwheel will unlock an extra five levels, and collecting the pinwheels in the extra levels will grant you a bonus stage inspired by Flappy Bird.

The main movement mechanics are walking left/right, jumping, and creating clouds underneath yourself. They act as a platform for the character to jump off of, and three can be created at a time. The amount of clouds you have left to place is indicated by three cloud symbols in the corner, and you can regain cloud platforms by touching a surface (that isn't a cloud, or that will kill you).

Alongside the clouds, there are items and mechanics in the levels that do different things, depending on which you interact with. You can collect cotton candy, which will restore your cloud platforms no matter your location, as well as darker cloud objects, which will make your clouds rain water and destroy weak blocks/kill enemies. There is also water that can destroy your clouds, spikes and gray enemies which can kill you, and fans which can push your clouds.

The game is split into four sections, with each section containing 5 levels, and the last section only accessible if you collect the pinwheels in every section leading up to it. The first three sections are themed after places that experience rainfall (Plains, Forest, City) while the last section is themed after a rocky/molten lava area. As well, the secret level is themed after space, with your character riding on a cloud.

Development

Cumulus Kid was made by Jason Touhey and Jeffrey Hepburn in collaboration with Crooms Academy of Information Technology. It was developed as a project in Croom's Game & Simulation Design Class by a student for a final project, before being reworked into another version after the teacher was impressed with the game. The project picked up development in September 2014 to December 2016, and switched platforms from PC to Mobile. Created in GameMaker Studio, the game made it to the final stages of development, before the files were lost and was reverted to Beta stages. The game can be played on PC only, though the Virtual Keys match the in-dev mobile version.
