Cyanide, Supercluster 01 is a 2021 composite drama film written and directed by Amar Somaroo, who produced it with Pearl Yazgangil. The film is narrated by Sagas, a novel writer, who translates his suffering from the search for his soulmate in a novel through the tragedy he creates around the protagonists. The ensemble cast includes Lateesha Verwey, Christopher van Duijn, Gabriela Braams, Paul Broeders, Dina Sobhi, and Amine Kreek. The film follows six intertwined stories that delve into various social- and political issues in Dutch society.[1][2]

Pre-production began in late 2019, casting took place in April 2020, and principal photography lasted two months, from November 2020 to January 2021, in The Netherlands. The entire crew consisted of millennials. The film follows a nonlinear narrative, with the viewer being presented with parallel distinctive plotlines, which build up to an anticlimax.[3][4][5]

Produced during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cyanide, Supercluster 01 was released for online streaming in the United Kingdom and in the United States on June 1, 2021 on Amazon Prime Video and worldwide on Vimeo on August 16, 2021.[3][4][6] It premiered at the ROOTS Film Festival in The Hague on December 18, 2021.[7]

Plot[edit]

Cyanide, Supercluster 01 consists of six stories or vignettes, tied together loosely to envision the complexity of social- and political issues - in Dutch society - regarding racism, homosexuality, nepotism, fame, rape, and domestic abuse. The plot follows six millennials, each being pushed to their mental limits to explore the darkest corners of human behavior.[3][4][6][5]

The film wraps up in a 7th and final storyline, revealing that the stories take place inside TON 618 and the protagonists are subjects of the zoo hypothesis, being examined by advanced extraterrestrial life for educational purposes.

Production[edit]

Creating a composite film with six storylines was a logistical hazard that needed extensive pre-production. Initially, the project was planned to be a series with six episodes, but with a microbudget of €5.000, the creative decision was made to turn the film into a "super-trailer". It took the producers several months to figure out how to plan and film all the different storylines, having to take the complexity of working with 70 individuals in mind.[6] Everyone, except for the composer and animator, worked on royalty-based contracts.[2] Somaroo started creating the individual timelines by writing pieces of the synopsis in split scenes and focused on finding a balance in the way the timeline(s) would be spread out. The goal was to make the six (+ the anticlimax) different timelines feel like watching a complete feature-length film, while simultaneously cutting the film like a trailer the length of a feature.

Production began in late 2020 and a strict protocol had to be followed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. Principal photography took place in The Hague, Rotterdam and Amsterdam over a period of 25 filming days. Most of the filming had to take place indoors, as several lockdowns were induced in The Netherlands during the production.

Casting[edit]

Casting was executed by Anniek Wennekes starting six months before principal photography. Finding several suitable candidates proved to be difficult and the casting for the lead male role in the 5th timeline "SupernovaBabe" happened several days before principal photography.

Filming[edit]

Principal photography on the film began in Amsterdam on November 25, 2020. Locations included The Hague, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam, while a separate set had to be built in The Hague for the anticlimax to represent the extraterrestrials in TON 618.

Soundtrack[edit]

The original soundtrack for Cyanide, Supercluster 01 was composed by French composer Nassir-Kélian.

Promotion and release[edit]

The official trailer of the film was released on April 3, 2021. The film was released on Amazon Prime Video in the United Kingdom and the United States for online streaming on June 1, 2021 and worldwide on Vimeo on August 16, 2021[8][9]

Exhibition[edit]

The film was screened at the ROOTS Film Festival in the Netherlands on December 18, 2021 at Filmhuis Den Haag.[7]
