Vasudevan Nair, (c. 1919–1982) better known by his nom de plume Cynic, was a film critic and writer from Kerala, India. He was a graduate in Chemistry and was an employee with the postal department. One of the first generation film writers in Malayalam, he reviewed over 1,000 Malayalam films over three decades.[1] His first film review was published in the Mathrubhumi Illustrated Weekly on October 3, 1950, titled "Mahal: Oru Aswadanam".[1] He was a regular columnist in Mathrubhumi along with Kozhikodan and Nadirsha (T. M. P. Nedungadi). The trio is said to have elevated film criticism into a serious genre of writing in Malayalam.[2] Cynic did not stop reviewing films when Mathrubhumi stopped their regular film review column. He continued to publish in Chandrika weekly, on the tenth page of The Hindu daily, in the Gulf Voice, and in Kalalayam magazine, in both Malayalam and English alike.[3]

Cynic died on 21 December 1982, at the age of 63.[1]
