Cynthia Midgley (née Freeman, 1925–2021) was a professional viola player in string quartets and chamber orchestras, in London and Edinburgh, touring the UK and overseas.
Early life
Cynthia was born in Kolkata (Calcutta) in British India in 1925.[1] Her mother, Caroline Freeman, was a nurse and nanny to a British family, who was unmarried. Cynthia's mother moved back to England with her three-month-old daughter, finding employment as a nurse in a maternity home in St Leonards-on-Sea, near Brighton, England. Cynthia won scholarships to the Brighton School of Music, to the Isolde Menges school for violin in Barnes London, and in 1942 to the Royal College of Music in London.[1]
Career
Midgley embarked on a career as a professional viola player, and through the 1940s played with the Boyd Neel Orchestra, the Vivien Hind Quartet, the St George Quartet and the Kalmar Orchestra. She also played in the pit at the Old Vic.[1]
She married John Midgley in 1953, and after a career break to raise three children, the family moved to Edinburgh, Scotland. In the late 1960s, she resumed her career, playing with the Scottish Baroque Ensemble and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra until retirement in the mid-1980s.[2]
