Dr. Cyril "Kim'" M. Hetsko (May 25, 1942 – November 15, 2022) was a doctor of internal medicine, with a subspecialty in infectious diseases and laboratory medicine.[1] For two terms, Hetsko was a member of the AMA Board of Trustees (2003, 2007).[2] Hetsko was a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin[3] and also the Chief Medical Officer for Commission on Office & Laboratory Accreditation (COLA), a clinical laboratory education, consultation, and accreditation organization in Columbia, Maryland.[4] Hetsko did his medical internship and residency in internal medicine at the University Hospitals in Madison, Wisconsin where he became chief resident.[5] He was the Chairman of the Wisconsin Medical Society Task Force on AIDS in Wisconsin.[6]

Personal life[edit]

Hetsko was born in Montclair, New Jersey[6] on May 25, 1942 to Cyril Francis Hetsko, an attorney working in Manhattan, New York City,[7] and Josephine Stein Hetsko, a homemaker and community volunteer.[8]  He had an older sibling, Jacqueline Hetsko Kaufer and two younger siblings, Cynthia (Cindy) Hetsko Rainey and Jeffrey Francis Hetsko. He graduated from Ridgewood High School in 1960 with high honors.[9] Hetsko attended Amherst College in Amherst, MA where he was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity writing for the News Bureau[10] and he served as the Chapter President during his senior year.[11] He graduated from Amherst in 1964.[12] Hetsko's great-grandparents on his father’s side emigrated to the United States from Slovakia.[13] Hetsko died peacefully in St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, WI on November 15, 2022, at the age of 80.[14]

Education[edit]

Hetsko graduated from Ridgewood High School in 1960 with high honors. and further graduated from Amherst College (1964, Bachelor of Arts), and the University of Rochester School of Medicine (1968, M.D.).[15] Hetsko received a National Institute of Health fellowship for study at the Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital in London, UK. Hetsko was Board Certified in internal medicine.

Military service[edit]

Hetsko served as a Major in the United States Army at Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases and Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Fort Detrick, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., (1972–1975).[16]

Medical practice[edit]

Hetsko provided Internal Medicine and Infectious diseases medical care for for more then three decades at the Dean Medical Center, Madison, WI (1975-2002).

Boards, associations and panels[edit]

American Medical Association Hetsko was an elected member and then chair of the American Medical Association Council on Medical Service from 1995 to 2003. From 1982 to 2003, he was a member and then chair of the Wisconsin delegation to the AMA House of Delegates. Hetsko was a member of the Board of Trustees and liaison to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Chicago, IL from 2003 until 2011.[17]

American College of Physicians (ACP, merged with American Society of Internal Medicine) From 1991 until 1998 Hetsko served as a trustee and the treasurer of the American Society of Internal Medicine. Hetsko played an active role in leading its merger with the American College of Physicians. After that, Hetsko served as regent and then the national treasurer of ACP from 2002 to 2004.[18]

Wisconsin Medical Society From 1991 to 1992, Hetsko was president of the Wisconsin Medical Society.[6] [19]

Hetsko was the Chief Medical Officer of Commission on Laboratory Accreditation, a member of Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement Executive Committee.

Teaching and lecturing[edit]

From 1995 to 2017 Hetsko was a Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (1995-2017), Madison, WI[20][21] and Lectured nationally and internationally on many topics including health system reform, quality measures and bioterrorism.

Honors and tributes[edit]

The Wisconsin Chapter of the American College of Physicians awarded Hetsko in 1990 with Addis Costello Award for outstanding work in internal medicine.[22]

In 2005 Hetsko received the Wisconsin ACP Laureate Award in 2005,[23] and the Wisconsin Medical Charles Hoffman Memorial Lecture at the American Urological Association meeting. In 2007, he received the Society’s highest honor, the Directors Award.[24]

In 2009 Dr. Hetsko presented the Charles Hoffman Memorial Lecture at the American Urological Association meeting. In 2015, Hetsko was elected a Master of the American College of Physicians, which is the highest rank in the largest medical specialty organisation in the United States of America.[25] Wisconsin Medical Society awarded Hetsko in 2007 with society’s highest honor, the Director’s Award and in 2011 with Presidential Citation Award.[26]

In 2022 a memorial fund, Cyril "Kim" Hetsko, MD Trainee Leadership Fund, the has been set up at the Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation.[27]
