DANOS is an open source Network Operating System created by AT&T using the Vyatta technology acquired from Brocade. AT&T selected Linux Foundation as the steward for the project.[1] The motivation behind DANOS was described in the AT&T "dNOS" whitepaper. DANOS is intended to be a more open, cost-effective and flexible alternative to traditional networking equipment.[2] The project is focused on carrier grade networks and is designed around solving the problems of networks at that scale.
The project is a continuation of the Vyatta project by the original team with several significant architectural improvements such as:
- A DPDK based user space forwarding engine for improved forwarding throughput and features.
- A framework to add support for hardware forwarding ASICs.
- A new management plane where data-model definition is based on the YANG modeling language.
- A formalized management plane API supporting several languages.
- A new component integration mechanism to make writing features for the system easier.
- A sandbox mechanism allowing for Role Based Access Control Management to co-exist with the Hybrid CLI from Vyatta.
DANOS uses the following open source projects for its control plane protocols
- Routing - FRRouting
- IPsec - Strongswan
DANOS also has many feature enhancements over the last public Vyatta release.
DANOS is based on Debian Linux.
