DDraceNetwork (DDNet) is a free, open-source sidescrolling multiplayer precision platformer based on Teeworlds and maintained by the community. It features simple cartoon-themed graphics and physics and relies heavily on classic shooter weaponry and gameplay. Currently there are official versions for Microsoft Windows, Linux.[1][2], macOS and it has been available via digital distributor Steam since 2020.[3] The source code is publicly available on GitHub.

Gameplay[edit]

While Teeworlds is a sidescrolling multiplayer shooting game, DDNet has a unique cooperative gameplay. Up to 64 players on each server work together to make their way through community-made maps. Players can get frozen and then require help from other players to get unfrozen again.[4] The finish times on maps are compared globally.[5]

A grappling hook is available to swing around and to hook other players to pull them towards the player. Double jumping enables playes to maneuver in the air.

A laser can be used to unfreeze other players, a shotgun to pull players, a grenade's explosion to fly away with speed, and most importantly a hammer can be used in close distance to hit and unfreeze another player. The grappling hook enables many different flying techniques such as Hammerfly and Hookfly, with new techniques still being found by the community.[6]

Much of the game graphics is easily user customizable with assets and skin packs.[7][8] It is possible for players to run their own custom game servers for LAN or Internet gameplay instead of using the official servers.[9]

Server Types[edit]

Multiple categories for maps exist:

  • Novice / Moderate / Brutal / Insane: Regular maps that are played together in a group, can't be finished alone usually. Novice is the easiest and recommended for new players, Insane the hardest.
  • Dummy: Maps that are played with a dummy player, which stays frozen for the entire map
  • DDmaX: Maps from the DDRace server DDracemaX by Tsin, which was popular before DDNet
  • Oldschool: Other old DDRace maps that were created prior to DDNet
  • Solo: Maps that are played alone
  • Race: Maps which are played alone and have no freeze
  • Fun: Maps which don't fit into the regular theme, but use DDNet physics to implement some other fun experience

History[edit]

DDNet development was started in 2013, based on the older DDRace modification, itself based on the Race modification of Teeworlds. Since then the client and server have been continuously improved, and over 2000 maps have been created by the community[10]. New maps are being submitted and tested continuously on the DDNet Discord server.

DDraceNetwork was released on Steam on August 17, 2020.[3][11]

The latest version 15.9 was released on February 13, 2022,[12] and is under continued development on GitHub.[13]

Development[edit]

Because DDNet is open-source[14], a community actively develops it, using GitHub[15]. DDNet is mainly programmed in the programming language C++.

Reception[edit]

After the 2020 release on Steam, Steamspy reported in 2022 over 500,000 game installations and around 12,000 daily active users over the last 2 weeks.[16] While the game is considered challenging and hard to start with, there is a large number of available maps and rich gameplay.[17][18]
